A Simple Guide to Wood Screws for Beginners Who Just Want Things to Hold

If you’re someone who wants to get more creative with their DIY skills, then you must educate yourself on everything so that you can be the best DIYer possible.

From online resources to learning from others who have a lot more experience as a self-made DIY individual, the more you know, the better chance of success with any future projects.

For those beginners who want to fix, build, or repair items with wood, here are some useful tips that will help guide them to success.

A wooden shelf mounted on a white wall holds two potted bonsai trees, a vintage camera, a clear glass, and camera lenses arranged neatly in a row.

Best all-purpose screws for beginners

For the right wood screw that’s all-purpose in its benefits, you’re best buying a screw that handles 90% of household, furniture, and DIY projects.

It’s a good idea to go for something like Countersunk Twinthread Woodscrew. These have sharp points that don’t often require much in the way of pre-drilling, and the threads are designed to grip well in softwoods, chipboard, and MDF.

Pozi is the standard that offers a great grip and reduces the chance of the screwdriver slipping. Torx drivers are even better if you have a drill, as they rarely slip.

You also have a choice of finishes, with yellow-passivated or zinc-plated being the optional choice for most.

Choosing the right size

The right size is important to choose, too, when picking out wood screws as a beginner. The length should be long enough to pass through the top piece and sink into the bottom piece by at least twice the thickness of the top piece.

If you’re attaching a 20mm thick piece of wood to a 50mm piece, for example, then using a 40mm to 50mm long screw is best.

Diameter-wise, a 4mm-5mm screw is generally best for general projects.

Key concepts to know

Knowing the concepts is a good way of tackling the use of wood screws as a beginner, successfully. Here are a couple of tips to know:

  • Countersunk – The head is conical, which allows it to sit flush with or below the surface of the wood.
  • Partially threaded – Threads are only at the tip and are suitable for pulling two pieces of wood tightly together.
  • Fully threaded – Threads go all the way to the head and are good for high grip, but sometimes push pieces apart.

How to make things hold

To make things hold successfully, there are some helpful steps worth following:

  1. Pre-drill pilot holes

First and foremost, be sure to pre-drill pilot holes, as this stops the wood from splitting. Drill a small hole first, and then the drill bit you use should be slightly smaller than the screw’s inner core.

  1. Use the right tool

The right tool is something to match the scre head to avoid destroying said screw head.

  1. Don’t over-tighten

It’s best to stop tightening when the head is flush with the wood. Over-tightening it beyond this point can strip the wood fibers and thus destroy the holding power it would otherwise have.

This guide will hopefully ensure you get the most out of your DIY projects, whatever they may be or look like.
