Botox vs Fillers: What’s The Difference?

Looking for a non-invasive way to enhance your looks? Both Botox and fillers could be solutions worth looking into. These popular treatments involve injecting solutions into the skin. Each one has temporary results, so if you don’t like the result, you don’t have to worry about any permanent changes. The effect of each injectable is very different though and it’s important to pick the right one for your beauty goals. Below is a comparison of Botox and fillers that delves deeper into the differences.

A person wearing a hair cover receives a cosmetic injection near the eye from someone wearing pink gloves, who is holding a syringe and gently supporting the persons face.

What is Botox?

Botox treatment involves injecting botulinum toxin into the skin, which temporarily freezes muscles in the immediate area. While the idea of injecting a toxin into the body might sound scary, the dose is tiny and carefully measured so that it doesn’t cause any harm.

What is Botox used for?

By freezing certain muscles, Botox is able to get rid of dynamic wrinkles like frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines that form when we make certain expressions. It can make people look younger and it can also prevent dynamic wrinkles from turning into permanent furrows as you get older.

How long does it last?

Botox often lasts for about 3 to 4 months. Some people may see slightly shorter effects, while for others the effect can last longer. It depends a lot on the dosage and your metabolism (if you have a faster metabolism, expect shorter-lasting results).

What are fillers?

Dermal fillers consist of a gel-like substance, which is injected under the skin to add volume. Most clinics use hyaluronic acid – a natural moisturizer found in the skin – but sometimes other substances can be used for longer-lasting results.

What are fillers used for?

As the name suggests, fillers help to ‘fill’ out areas. They are most commonly used to plump up lips, however they can also be used to smooth under-eye hollows or restore volume to cheeks. Deep wrinkles and scars can also sometimes be softened using fillers.

How long do they last?

Fillers typically last longer than Botox – often 6 to 18 months. Some can last up to 2 years, depending on the type of product used and the area it is used on.

Should you get Botox or fillers?

If you’re trying to reduce lines caused by facial expressions, choose Botox. This is the most common injectable used on wrinkles. It’s shorter lasting, but this means that it can be less of a commitment for those trying injectables for the first time. Avoid Botox if you’re trying to tackle deep static wrinkles or add volume.

This is where fillers come in – they’re great for filling out sagging areas and deep wrinkles, and also the best choice for enhancing the appearance of lips. Fillers last longer than Botox, so can be a good choice wanting a longer-lasting effect. Don’t choose fillers if you’re trying to reduce fine dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet or frown lines (this is Botox territory).

You can use Botox and fillers together. This could be a way to target different types of wrinkles around the face. Just be wary that this will cost more and you’ll need to find a beautician licensed to administer both types of injectable.
