Contact Lenses vs Glasses: Choosing The Right Corrective Vision For You

Glasses and contacts are two popular forms of sight correction, but which one is the best option for you? In this post, we’ll compare the two solutions and their pros and cons.

A pair of eyeglasses sits on a blue surface, surrounded by several open blister packs containing clear contact lenses.

Why choose contact lenses?

Contact lenses can be a more practical option for those that do sports. While you can buy sports glasses that are designed to stay on your head, contact lenses are much less likely to fall out or be damaged. They’re particularly useful for combat sports where glasses can be easily broken. You also don’t have anything interfering with your peripheral vision like you do with glasses.

Another benefit of contact lenses is that they don’t fog up or experience glare. If you regularly drive at night, you may find contact lenses offer better vision because of the lack of glare from headlights. Meanwhile, the fact that contact lenses don’t fog up could be useful in winter if you have a job that involves regularly moving from cold outdoor areas to warm indoor areas.

Wearing contact lenses also gives you more flexibility to wear other accessories like sunglasses, VR headsets or motorcycle helmets without them getting in the way. You can buy accessories like prescription sunglasses, but wearing contacts prevents you from having to pay extra for these specialist shades.

Another major benefit for some people is the discreetness of contact lenses – no-one knows that you’re wearing them. While glasses have become more a fashion accessory in recent years, some people still don’t feel comfortable wearing them and find contacts more subtle.

Why choose glasses?

Glasses are the most popular option and a big reason for this is that they’re much easier to put on. A lot of people aren’t comfortable touching their own eyeball or find contact lenses too fiddly – glasses can be easily taken on and off when you need them, which can be useful if you also don’t need to wear them permanently (such as for reading).

If you suffer from dry eyes or allergies, you may also find that glasses cause less irritation. Glare can cause eye strain, but generally speaking, contact lenses can cause more issues if worn long term. If you often rub your eyes due to allergies, you also have the risk of tearing contact lenses or accidentally removing them, which you don’t have with glasses.

Glasses are also commonly selected as a fashion accessory. They come in all kinds of diverse styles including designer looks. Contact lenses are largely designed to be invisible, although there are options like coloured contact lenses that can be used to alter one’s appearance.

Can’t afford a stylish designer pair of glasses? There are fortunately many cheaper pairs for those who want to save money. In fact, it’s often possible to spend much less on glasses than you would on contact lenses if you’re not worried about having a stylish pair of specs. Just make sure to look after your glasses so that you don’t end up having to spend money on repairs and replacements.
