Becoming a homeowner is undoubtedly one of life’s little pleasures. It’s even tougher these days to get onto the property ladder, and so that moment when you’re clutching the keys to your very first home is something that everyone should cherish. Once we get over the hurdle of the purchase, this is when the hard work really begins.

Getting your home up to code requires a lot of effort, but it’s certainly worth it. We also need to remember that as we make changes to our home, we must ensure that our sanctuary is supportive so our loved ones feel safe and protected. Ensuring you have a safe home is not just about peace of mind; it’s about living up to the responsibility that every homeowner should take seriously. So let’s explore a few simple and effective things that will make all the difference.

Checking the Dangerous Components First

We can look at the infrastructure of our home and think that there is absolutely nothing to worry about, but there are many different areas that can be risky if they’re not secured.

There’s the electricity and the water, but we also need to know if the gas supply is secure. Getting someone out to check the gas may seem like a priority that’s way down the list, but you would be surprised at how many people have had slow gas leaks and didn’t even notice because it was happening outside the house rather than inside.

Ensuring that your gas valves are well maintained and protected from tampering is one thing, but you also need to know how to shut off the gas supply in case of an emergency like a gas leak.

Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We’ve got to strengthen our first lines of defence against any hazards in the home, and this is where the one-two punch of a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in the key areas of your home will make a massive difference in ensuring you are alert. This is particularly true when it comes to carbon monoxide because it’s silent and odourless.

Lots of people think they’re unwell with a mild dose of flu but can actually be poisoning themselves over time because of a carbon monoxide leak. Carbon monoxide detectors are cheap, and they last a good 10 years. Just make sure that you test your carbon monoxide and fire alarms once a week! It’s very straightforward, but can be a lifesaver.

Locks and Deadbolts

Another solid line of defence that will give you peace of mind. All exterior doors should be reinforced and have top-of-the-line door locks. Lots of us can take our doors for granted, thinking that they are impenetrable, but longer and stronger screws for every entry point will provide added security against potential intruders who can easily kick a plastic door down. When in doubt, you should go to a home outlet and see for yourself what sort of door will not just provide you with that protection but also work with the aesthetics.

The key to an amazing home is safety, and these are only a couple of things that will give you so much peace of mind.
