If food has been a problem in your life, or is currently a problem in your life, we know how hard this can be. It’s difficult when you don’t know what you’re doing, or you are struggling to execute the plan that you have set for yourself regarding your diet, but it doesn’t have to be.
The main problem that people have is that they are not keeping themselves informed, and therefore there is no motivation to do what needs to be done. This is a real problem, because change is only going to come around when you put the effort in to see it.
If food is a problem in your life, and it’s starting to get to a point where you need help, then you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to be discussing all things food and diet related so that you can hopefully make some better choices going forward. Does this interest you? Good, keep reading.
Understand What Your Body Needs
Perhaps the most important part of changing your relationship with food is going to be understanding what your body needs. You get taught about nutrition and balanced diet in school, so we know that you have at least some information on this, though it might be hidden in the back of your mind somewhere. If you are struggling with understanding what food you need, what nutrients you need, the way each piece of food impacts your body and so on, then you need to brush up on your education and knowledge surrounding food.
It might be wise to sign up to some nutrition courses so that you can gain the information that you are looking for.
We completely understand that this may not be something you have time for, and if this is true for you then it’s going to be a self taught journey instead. The internet is full of fantastic resources, just be sure that you are getting your information from trusted sites and journals rather than random things people made up. For example, Wikipedia is not your friend if you want trusted information.
Learn To Cook If You Can’t
If you cannot cook, this is going to be a problem. We know that there are multiple reasons that someone wouldn’t be able to cook, but as an adult it’s simply not good enough. All of the excuses stop when you get to a certain age because you could have done something productive about your lack of cooking skills and perhaps taken some classes or something.
Either way, you should be able to cook the absolute basics without problem and if you can’t, then it’s because you don’t want to. But, how are you supposed to feed yourself and keep yourself healthy if you can’t cook? You can’t really.
So, the solution to this problem is to learn to cook asap. The skills are not going to come all at one time, and it might be frustrating in the beginning if you are not getting the hang of it but you’ve just got to hang in there. Eventually you will be able to cook a meal that is balanced and nutritious without any issues, and that’s going to be one of the best achievements that you can make for your health.
The days of ordering takeout that is full of fats and oils need to be over, otherwise your health is going to continue to take a nosedive.
Meal Prep For Busy Days
People are busy, it’s just a fact of life, but this should not be used as an excuse as to why food has become a problem in your life. Of course, there are going to be days where you simply don’t want to stand there and cook a meal when you have had a busy day, and you don’t have to.
But, you also don’t have to reach for the takeout menu every single time this happens, as this is doing your body no favors at all. So, what is the solution? Meal preparation! If you know that you are going to have a busy couple of days in the week where you are not going to want to cook for yourself, take some time on one of your days off to do this.
By doing this, you are going to have a delicious, nutritious meal waiting for you when you get home, and all you have to do is heat it up. You don’t have to worry about falling off the bandwagon, you don’t have to worry about eating food that is full of processed fats and sugars, you can just enjoy it.
Some people think that even meal prep is too much effort though, and don’t want to give up their time off to cook. To those people, we say that you’re going to have to cook that day anyway, so why not make some extra while you’re already doing it?
Getting The Nutrients In
A common problem that people have with food is the fact that they don’t know how to get the nutrients that they need into their diet. Obviously, if you educate yourself a little more like we suggested at the beginning of this article then this is going to become easier, but some people may still struggle.
The good news is that there are plenty of recipes online that give you ideas for meals, and show you what nutrients they have in them. You can also find some simple snack ideas that are packed full of nutrients, so that throughout the day you are nourishing your body in the way that you need to.
If you struggle with getting the right amount of nutrients into your diet, then another option is to take supplements and other things that can assist you. You can find what you’re looking for on a site like AthleticStore or in a range of other locations. We’re not saying that you need to jump straight into this if you don’t want to, but it’s a suggestion that you can consider.
Work On Cutting Out Some Junk
Junk food is, and will always be a massive problem for some people. You know the saying that everything is okay if you have it in moderation, it’s completely true. You do not have to completely cut junk food out of your life if you want to be healthy and have a better relationship with food. What you do need to do though is to work on cutting some of the junk food out.
Junk food, or at least a certain type of junk food, is a weakness to many people and it’s different for everyone. For some people it’s biscuits, for others it’s chocolate, and for others it’s chips or soda. You’ve got to work on getting rid of some of this from your diet, and treating it as an indulgence rather than a common occurrence.
You should not be eating this kind of food on a daily basis as it is bad for you. Too much of anything can make you sick, even when it tastes so good. But, we bet that you already know that because we bet that you feel a little bit sick or at least a little bloated after you have eaten these foods, right? We know that doesn’t make them any easier to cut down on, but it’s necessary.
Make Better Takeout Choices
It’s important to note that we are not trying to say that you can never have takeout when you are working on your relationship with food, and trying to eradicate the problems that you have with it. But, we are saying that you need to start making better choices so that you are not coating your insides in fats when you decide that you want a little treat.
Of course you can enjoy some takeout food every now and then, but this doesn’t have to be to an excess just because you view it as a treat. For example, if you would regularly get a double cheeseburger, why don’t you try cutting it down to a single? It’s not a massive change, but it will have a massive change on your body.
Try ordering a side salad instead of something like fries if you feel like it. Try to make healthier choices where you can, if you can. If you can’t, and you just fancy something really greasy, then do it. As long as you are not doing this on a regular basis, it’s not going to impact you negatively. It is only a problem if it’s a common occurrence in your life.
The journey to have a better relationship with food is likely going to be a long and rocky one, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth it. We promise that if you are willing to put in the effort, and if you are remaining consistent, eventually you will get to where you want to be. This process is as much mental as it is physical, so don’t start it if you’re not 100% committed to seeing change in your life.
