So you’re getting your first dog. This is a wonderful decision that will not only bring you a lot of joy and companionship, but will also be giving a beautiful animal a much-needed home.
You have a great deal to look forward to with your new friend as you make memories together and keep each other company in years to come.
But when you’ve never looked after an animal before, it can be a little nerve-wracking.
You are now in charge of a tiny creature and have to keep it alive, fed, and happy. What if you get things wrong? What if you and your new dog don’t get along?
If you are committed to caring for your canine companion, you have nothing to worry about. Dogs are easy to look after as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort.
They will love you unconditionally, and you will soon realise what a fantastic decision you have made.
To get you started, here are four tips to help first time dog owners to care for their new pet.

Be patient
You can’t be expected to know everything right away. Learning how to care for a dog takes time, and you will no doubt make mistakes along the way. Just take things one day at a time and get used to your new circumstances. Your dog may be initially tentative around you, or you may struggle to toilet train them. They may not know the borders of your property and want to run out of them, something a GPS dog fence can help you with.
In time you will find solutions to these problems, so don’t be disheartened if things don’t initially go the way you had hoped.
Ask for advice
There are lots of people out there who own dogs and are experts in caring for their pets.
If you’re unsure about something, just ask a friend or family member for advice. They were once in your shoes so there is no shame in seeking help. They’ll be able to give you some great tips and tricks for training your dog and getting used to having an animal in the house.
Get the basic essentials
You don’t need to spend a fortune on your dog, but there are some essential pieces of kit you need to ensure they have a happy and healthy life in your home. You’ll need a dog bed for them to sleep in, plenty of food, a lead for going on walks, poo bags, and lots of toys for them to play with.
There are plenty of great pet stores where you can buy all these items relatively cheaply, or you can order them online from a store such as Pet Rebellion.
Make time for your dog
A new dog coming into an unfamiliar house for the first time can be rather needy. Especially if they are a young puppy.
They can feel scared and overwhelmed by their new surroundings and it may take them some time to get used to it. So it’s not a good idea to go off to work every day and leave them for long periods of time.
You need to be there for them and ensure you have plenty of quality one-on-one time to help them acclimatise.
